Karim Noureldin’s Game of Scale
The Lausanne-based artist is a master in the game of proportions and scale, as he showcases in two presentations his year.
Karim Noureldin’s artistic practice knows no boundaries or limitations in scope. From a hand-drawn single line to a geometric pattern, from the surface of a vessel into public space, his works—some of which are presented here—grow, morph, and shape-shift organically.
These compositions of all sizes and forms blend into their surroundings, transforming their environment just as much as they are inspired and nourished by it: A diptych enamel painting unfolds on a garage door as it closes or slides open, reflecting its function as an entrance and passage. Other works are immersive and impossible to grasp at a glance due to their sheer size, such as wall paintings over several floors in a stairwell, murals on entire buildings, or a thousand square-meter drawing on the floor onto which visitors step when entering an exhibition space. The appeal of such works lies in the underscoring of the spatial order in which they exist, providing the viewer with a sublime feeling, a here-and-now experience.

Abstract art, such as that created by Noureldin, is delicate, vibrating, tactile, melodious, and harmonious with the world. Concerning his drawing practice, which is often the starting point for his large-scale endeavors, he explains: “Working on paper means planning, phrasing, and outlining an idea, so my drawings always relate to an imaginary, three-dimensional world.“ And so, Noureldin’s hand is always at play: a virtuoso and a master in the game of proportions and scale.
